He was adorable since when he came
Spotless, faultless - nothing to blame
Became part of the family in a heartbeat
Was always in the house to greet
He was colorfully pleasing, always entertaining
Never a dull moment - poor thing
Sometimes fueled a quarrel between spouse
as he became the center of the house
Felt like the best thing ever to happen
especially to men, than to women
Such was Life in all its splendor.
I tried my best - but could only be so tender
Until I took the remote and shut off -
the passionate vast plasma!

Thought for the day : I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book. ~Groucho Marx

Parenting Parody
This is your uncle and this is your aunt
here are the cousins you would want
Grandmas and Grandpas that you can go to
Sisters and Brothers for you to pursue
I teach them all to my son
making sure nothing is forgotten
in the new generation where,
the words "we", "us","our" have become rare
as they are all replaced by "Wii" - beware!
It seems easy, its instinctive - the teaching
yet - what a perplexity this holds
something heavy as it unfolds
that I see, me and my kids - both learning
I am teaching them attachments
while I am learning - detachments
-Padma
Thought for the day : Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry.
~W.B. Yeats

Rote hue..
Some songs become "special" to us for many reasons, but the 1 or 2 that stand out, like this one for me, is blogworthy.
"Rote hue aate hai sab, hasta hua jo jaayega"
This is a song from "Mukkadar ka sikandar", starring Amitab and Rekha. The song picturized on Amitabh as an introductory scene, is on his bike happily singing, with vim and vigor!
I was probably 6 or 7 when I saw this one and became an instant fan of this legend - not that I understood acting at that age, but probably hearing my dad praise him, made me watch him too and in the process probably got into humming a few of his songs. There is a small anecdote to this that, I was once humming this song , on my rocking horse & was so enthusiastically rocking, as if it was my bike ( as in the song) that I rocked myself down to the floor. I remember the fall. This is quite a snippet of my childhood which comes up at family dinners, whenever I talk about Bachchan.
Although the entire song is intensely written with superb choice of words, the couplet I would like to recall and always cherish is:
"Zindagi to bewafa hai, ek din tukhraayegi
Mauth mehabooba hai apna, saath lekar jayegi
Mar ke jeene ki ada ko duniya ko sikhlayega"
The translation goes like this:
Life is deceitful - faithless - since one day, it is bound to leave you, but it is Death that will take you along and is hence your lover ..and it is that Death, that will teach the world how one lives on, even after dying
I bow to Kalyanji and Anandji, who coined these verses and how lucky to be able to hear it through none other than - Kishor Kumar!
Its a no brainer that I still continue to adore this yesteryear Bachchan.( I'll reserve my comments about him continuing to act) This song rings in my ears with increasing melody every time I play it! Its funny that this is such a casual song but is so philosophically deep in its meaning (and what it means to me)
On a sad note, Prakash Mehra the director of this movie has passed away y'day. Probably one of the reasons, what made me recall all this.

Mother's Day
I had a good mother's day.
My almost 5 year old son, gave me a dandelion wrapped in a tin foil and called it a flower bouquet :) My 17th month old was busy & kept of us to his beat. I think the best part was I chatted with my mom for more than 2 hours, recalling our bygone days, got nostalgic - we laughed and we cried. In the end, we thought we brewed the best of the day!
Although initially I had chucked away this whole concept of "mothers day", since we all say " we love mothers EVERY DAY", I think there is more to this feeling than just being one more Hallmark card day.
Too often, things that are routine are taken for granted, just as this one. Mothers are mothers , and yes forever. So why a specific day and what on that day. I think doing anything special this day, something to show your love , just as you would celebrate somebody's graduation or somebody's wedding, I think just for one day, to quietly sit back and give a tribute in your own small way is a good opportunity to express all those zillion feelings the word "mother" could mean to us.
This reminds me of the discussion at Chinmaya Mission on following rituals if one has reaslised the essence. My stance continues to be same that - rituals - in terms of actions - always help draw us to the thought and keep us anchored more strongly . I think it's upto us to choose how we want to do it and does not necessarily translate to a lavish lunch or a Swedish massage.
But come to think of it, Lives have gotten so busy that, there will soon be "Talk to your neighbor day" or a "No TV day". My personal favorite would be "Handwritten mail day"!
My confession for today is, I tried to give my mom a break from cooking, which she has been since she landed here, but I failed! She managed to cook a couple , but I am glad that we went out for the dinner.
I thank my Mother who helped me walk through infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and now, my own motherhood :) I don't think I would have survived without her - no pun intended.
In appreciation to everything that is a Mother, including Mother Nature and Mother earth, below are a few verses sent by my sister and I thought they were perfect!
BEFORE I WAS A MOM
Before I was a Mom;
I made and ate hot meals,
I had unstained clothing,
I brushed my hair every day,
I had quiet conversations on the phone,
I slept as late as I wanted and I slept all night long.
Before I was a Mom;
I cleaned my house each day,
I never tripped over toys or forgot lullabies,
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous,
I had never been puked on, pooped on, spit on, chewed on, peed on, orpinched by tiny fingers.
Before I was a Mom;
I never thought about immunizations,
I never held a screaming child so the doctors could give shots,
I never looked into teary eyes and cried,
I never felt my heart break into pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt,
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
Before I was a Mom;
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put it down,
I never sat up late hours of the night watching a baby sleep,
I never got up in the middle of the night to make sure everything was okay,
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
Before I was a Mom;
I had complete control of my mind, my thoughts and my body,
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside of my body,
I didn't know that having something so small could make me feel soimportant,
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache,the wonderment, or the satisfaction of being a mom.
Before I was a Mom;
I never knew that something so small could effect my life so much,
I never knew that I could love someone so much,
I never knew I would love being a Mom,
I didn't know the bond between a Mother and her child,
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much.
Wishing all mothers and soon to-be mothers a very Happy Mother's Day!

Tring Tring - its Spring!
It’s very reaffirming to see colors everywhere – in flowers and people alike. The ambassador of the climate – Tulips – are standing pretty tall, heralding sunny days!
Finally good riddance to those long black jackets and people are now springing into colorful clothes. All the fountains are back, bouncing high in the air, trees are looking so bountiful & lush, sprinklers are in action drenching the green grass, flip flops & swim wear have hit the stores - what more! Its spring!
Lawns and nails are thinking manicure, while foodies are thinking barbecue. Everyone’s thinking of finally ice-creams, instead of moisturizing creams :) Kids are finally in the parks, while folks are stepping out for a walk!
Yesss – its spring!
These new blossoms whispering that everyday is a new day and can be lived better than yesterday.
Its just beautiful!
Song of the day : Masth baharon ka mein aashique
